How to Use a Ladder Safely?

Stepladders range from 122 cm to 610 cm in height. Ladders that are shorter than 122 cm are considered stepladders.

According to statistics, about 50 thousand workers were injured or injured in the event of falling from stepladders. Modern ladders are made of high-quality material, ensuring their stability; however, the safety rules when using ladder equipment have not been canceled. Therefore, knowledge of basic safety rules for working at height will help avoid falls and injuries and facilitate installation work.

Safety Regulations for Work at Height

Before work, it is necessary to check the serviceability of the ladder equipment. If the ladder is not used for a long time, it is essential to inspect it and ensure that all connections and components are in good working order. Then, carry out repairs, if necessary, and only then proceed to work.

Only work on ladders with the correct working height. A ladder that is too long will have to be positioned at the wrong angle, and on a low structure, it is inconvenient to reach the necessary elements. On the other hand, a stepladder with an optimal working height is a guarantee of safety.

Examine the rungs of the stepladder. In heavy dirt, clean the grooves to prevent the feet from slipping during the ascent and descent.

Remember one thing, always installed the ladder at the correct angle – 75 degrees to the wall.

Not all ladders are compact enough to be transported in the trunk of a car. When transporting the ladder, carefully fasten the structure to the vehicle; this will help avoid mechanical damage and falling equipment.

When installing the ladder, carefully examine the surface of the support. It should not be slippery or uneven. It is not recommended to install the ladder on plastic and glass surfaces and attach it to metal nets. For solid and reliable support on soft ground, sand, wooden boards, or other non-slip objects are placed under the stepladder.

When climbing to a height, hold the ladder with your hands. When working with a drill or hammer drill, do not leave the tool in working order, as the equipment may slip, resulting in loss of balance and, consequently, injury to the user.

Before carrying out installation work, clean the soles of shoes from moisture and dirt – these are the main reasons for slipping.

There can be no more than two people on one staircase, and you should not use a stepladder in solid winds. On a high staircase, do not stand too high – the best option would be if the last step is at the level of the belt.

By following simple safety rules, you will safely work at heights, excluding injuries and falls.
