How To Install Double Din Head Unit Properly?
Getting a new car stereo can be exciting and the thrill of toying with it is exhilarating. But with all this excitement comes a very genuine question of installation, How To Install Double Din Head Unit Properly?
Now, a car’s stereo can be a touchscreen to non-touchscreen and you can also choose from Single Din or Double Din. Single and Double Din are just a standard that is used for head unit sizes, they have different dimensions and heights.
To install a Double Din head unit in your car you’ll require equipment like prying tools, screwdrivers, wire cutters, cable ties, electric tape, nut drivers, pliers, and any specific installation kit for your car.
When you have all of these, then you need to follow some simple steps to install your brand-new double din head unit all by yourself.
Step-1: Remove the old stereo:
To remove the stereo from your car’s dashboard, you need to remove the plastic trim around it by locating and removing any bolts or screws around it.
After the trim, remove the four bolts at each corner of the exposed stereo, then pull it out gently. With it will come a wiring harness and antenna for radio which also needs to be removed by pressing the clips on the harness.
Step-2: Getting and fixing a new Dash Kit:
You need a Dash kit for your new stereo to properly fit your vehicle and look nice when it’s there. Get a Dash kit that is specifically manufactured and engineered for your car’s year and model.
They are not very expensive, so getting one along with your new stereo is not going to be a big deal. Install this Dash Kit into the Dashboard by clipping the pieces together and sliding the stereo through the Dash Kit’s front. Now secure the Dash kit with screws.
Step-3: Harness wiring:
An Antenna adapter and a Harness Adapter is needed to wire your stereo up. Each wire is of different color and serves different purpose, attach color to color. Red is for ignition, Yellow for battery, Blue for Antenna, and so on.
It’s all on the instruction manuals, following it and connecting color to color with heat shrinking and soldering would be best for a good connection. You can also twist the wires together and put electrical tape on them but it’s not recommended.
Step-4: Power up the new stereo:
After wiring, plug the harness and antenna back behind the new stereo and connect the stock harness unplugged from the old stereo to the other end of the harness. If you want to get subwoofers, it is the perfect time to plug in RCA wires into the head unit’s back for amp input. Your new stereo is now ready to work and all powered up.
Step-5: Put it all together:
After testing power, music and speakers, put your Dash back in place by screwing in the Dash kit on its spots securely.
