To ensure that the data packets are sent to the right address, a unique IP is assigned to each device. It helps in transferring the data between multiple devices and saves the data from the risk of getting lost in the network.
A router also allows you to return the data, or send your own data to the sender. It is safe to say that routers play the main role in sending and receiving of your data.

Although routers come built-in with many modern modems, the two are still quite different from each other.
To put it simply, a router helps you connect different devices in a network while, a modem connects you to your Internet that is provided to you by your ISP.
